Taking viewers inside a factory that rarely allows cameras inside,
Mega Factories: Apache Helicopters showcases one of the deadliest
weapons in the U.S. military's arsenal, the Apache attack helicopter
In only five weeks, workers must ensure that each Apache is strong
enough to survive enemy fire and is agile and fast enough to serve
as a stealth attack weapon. Amazingly, these massive, 8-ton
helicopters are put together almost entirely by hand using hand
tools and not robotic assembly lines. Assemblers coat the
helicopter's belly with protective layers to shield against enemy
fire and transform the cockpit into an armoured cocoon, plated with
bullet-proof glass and seat fabric. Massive engines - each about as
powerful as a diesel locomotive engine - are attached to the Apache,
enabling it to reach top speeds of more than 300 kilometres per
hour. In one of the final steps, workers must install more than 12
kilometres of wiring to the Apache's complicated dashboard system.
From start to finish, watch as these stealthy attack helicopters
are made battle-ready.
