Pompeii - The Last Day

In AD 79 Mount Vesuvius erupted with horrifying force, destroying the prosperous Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

On August 24, AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted with horrifying force, showering Pompeii with ash, smoke and rock. The city lay undisturbed under several feet of volcanic debris for more than 1,500 years. Now, with the help of eyewitness accounts, dramatic reenactments, expert investigations and incredible CGI, follow a cast of Pompeiians – among them were gladiators, soldiers, slaves and ordinary families – as they wake to the absolute horror of the early-morning eruption.

In 79 AD, one of the infamous natural disasters in human history occurred when Mount Vesuvius erupted. With speculative dramatizations of various inhabitants' final hours along with detailed documentation of the known facts concerning the eruption, the horrific day is vividly brought to life. In addition, the modern situation of life around Mount Vesuvius is shown and the overhanging danger that is still there today.

Pompeii - The Last Day is a dramatized documentary that tells of the eruption of Vesuvius in the year 79 AD. This eruption covered the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in ash and lava, killing all those trapped between the volcano and the sea. The documentary accurately portrays the different phases of the eruption. Directed by Peter Nicholson and written by Edward Canfor-Dumas, it is a BBC/TVE co-production.

The documentary tells the story of the eruption from the point of view of assorted inhabitants of Pompeii and Herculaneum whose names and occupations are known; including a local politician, a fuller, and two gladiators. It draws heavily on the eye-witness account of Pliny The Younger as well as historical research and recent discoveries in volcanology. Extensive CGI F/X were used to recreate the effects of the eruption.
