The LIMITED documentary called “The Garden” tells us the story of the now demolished South Central Farm; a community garden and urban farm located in Los Angeles, California. The Garden details the plight of the farmers who organized and worked on the farm only to see it sold to a private contractor and threatened with demolition. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature on 22 January 2009. Won only Grand Jury Award (2008 - Silverdocs Documentary Festival) for "Documentary", Scott Hamilton Kennedy.
The fourteen-acre community garden at 41st and Alameda in South Central Los Angeles is the largest of its kind in the United States. Started as a form of healing after the devastating L.A. riots in 1992, the South Central Farmers have since created a miracle in one of the country’s most blighted neighborhoods. Growing their own food. Feeding their families. Creating a community.
But now, bulldozers are poised to level their 14-acre oasis. The Garden follows the plight of the farmers, from the tilled soil of this urban farm to the polished marble of City Hall, filmmaker Scott Hamilton Kennedy documents the two-and-a-half-year court battle to save the South Central Farm. Mostly immigrants from Latin America, from countries where they feared for their lives if they were to speak out, we watch them organize, fight back, and demand answers:
Why was the land sold to a wealthy developer for millions less than fair-market value?
Why was the transaction done in a closed-door session of the LA City Council?
Why has it never been made public?
And the powers-that-be have the same response: “The garden is wonderful, but there is nothing more we can do.” If everyone told you nothing more could be done, would you give up? |

Documentarul prezintă în detaliu situaţia dificilă a agricultorilor care au organizat această fermă şi au lucrat la ea, doar ca să o vadă vândută unui antreprenor privat care a şi ameninţat cu demolarea.
"The Garden" a fost nominalizat la un premiu Oscar, pentru cel mai bun documentar. Dar nu a câştigat decât: Grand Jury Award la categoria "Documentare", Scott Hamilton Kennedy (2008 - Silverdocs Documentary Festival).

De ce a fost vândut terenul unui dezvoltator bogat, cu milioane mai puţin decât valorau în mod normal pe piaţă?
De ce a fost tranzacţia fost făcutăde către Consiliul oraşului Los Angeles într-o şedinţă cu uşile închise?
De ce tranzacţia nu a fost niciodată făcută publică?
Şi cei de la putere care au mereu acelaşi răspuns: "Gradina este minunată, dar nu mai putem face nimic!" Dacă toată lumea ţi-a spus deja nu se poate face nimic mai mult, te-ai da bătut? |
