Pete Owen-Jones, a vicar in a Sussex parish, is dissatisfied with some aspects of his faith and sets off on three extreme pilgrimages to China, India and Egypt to explore Zen Buddhism, Hinduism and ascetic Christianity.
Pete started as a copy-writer in advertising.
After a crisis of meaning, he found God and gave it all up to be ordained into the Anglican Church.
But now, 15 years later, he feels that the Church of England is too much a faith of the head, and not enough a faith of the soul, the heart or even the body. He now sets off on a quest in search of a more physical and mystical path to enlightenment.
Pete says: "What I'm looking for is a spirituality that is absent from western Christianity. A spirituality I know exists in the extremes of world religions. I hope to enter worlds where rule book and doctrine are replaced by an individual relationship with God and where the attainment of enlightenment is won by hardship, privation and pain. I have to become an extreme pilgrim."
In a bid to get to the heart of each faith Pete pushes himself to the limit of physical, mental and spiritual endurance: he undergoes hardship and exhaustion, bewilderment and anxiety, and yet throughout he undertakes his journeys with determination, courage and wit. |
Pete Owen-Jones, un vicar într-o parohie Sussex, nemulţumit de unele aspecte ale credinţei proprii se decide să arunce o privire, asupra a trei forme de pelerinaj extrem, în China, India şi Egipt, explorând astfel Budismul Zen, hinduismul şi asceza creştină.
Pete a început să lucreze în publicitate, în domeniul drepturilor de autor.
După o criză lăuntrică legată de sensul existenţei, el l-a găsit pe Dumnezeu şi a făcut totul pentru a fi hirotonit în Biserica Anglicană. Dar acum, după 15 ani, el simte că Biserica Angliei a devenit mult prea mult o credinţă a minţii, şi nu într-atât o credinţă cu sufletul, inima sau chiar cu corpul. El porneşte acum în căutarea unei căi mai mistice şi practice pentru iluminare.
Pete spune: "Ceea ce caut este o spiritualitate pe care nu o găsesc la creştinismul Occidental. O spiritualitate despre care ştiu că există în religiile extreme ale lumii. Sper să am acces la acele lumi în care regula cărţii şi a doctrinei este înlocuită de o relaţie individuală cu Dumnezeu şi în care dobândirea iluminării este dobândită prin greutăţi, lipsuri şi durere. Trebuie să devin un pelerin extrem (de ascetic)".
În încercarea de a ajunge la inima fiecărei credinţe Pete se împinge pe sine la limita maximă de rezistenţă fizică, mentală şi spirituală: el se supune dificultăţilor şi epuizării, uimirii şi de anxietăţii, şi totuşi se angrenează pe parcursul călătoriilor sale, cu determinare, curaj si spirit. |
